'Mme Butterfly' (London 1950)
 Schwarzkopf/Schock

Rudolf Schock sings with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Victoria de los Angeles and Joan Hammond in 1948, 1949 and 1950 at 'The Royal Opera House Covent Garden' in London.
He is the first German singer to appear outside of his homeland after the Second World War.

Karl Rankl, music director and conductor of the Covent Garden Opera in London, engages Rudolf Schock's promising talent during the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 1948.
He makes it a condition that Schock should be able to sing operas in English as soon as possible. A difficult task for someone who has never been able to learn English.
It was primarily the role of Rodolfo in 'La Bohème' by Puccini, the premiere of which was already on October 15, 1948.
'Der Rosenkavalier' by Richard Strauss, 'Die Zauberflöte' by Mozart and 'La Traviata' by Verdi would follow.
In the premiere of 'La Bohème', Elisabeth Schwarzkopf sings the role of Mimi, and further Ljuba Welitsch (Musette), Paolo Silveri (Marcello) and Geraint Evans (Schaunard) are singing.
In the performance on November 8, 1948, Mimi is portrayed by New Zealand soprano Joan Hammond. In addition to Schock, Maria Stader will appear as Pamina in the 'Magic Flute' and in 'La Traviata' Elisabeth Schwarzkopf again. Karl Rankl conducts most of the performances.

After the 1948/1949 opera season, Rudolf Schock accepts a tour contract to Australia at the invitation of the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission), which had been concluded for tenor legend Richard Tauber, who died on January 8, 1948.

Schock's mission is to broadcast forty broadcasts across Australia. These are orchestral concerts (under conductors such as Otto Klemperer and Rafaël Kubelik) with opera arias in the original language and 'songrecitals' (Brahms, Schubert, Wolf etc.) with six very different programs.
As a prelude to Australia, a Schubert recital via Radio Singapore is set for May 24, 1949. The intention is to go to Australia to continue the tour in New Zealand.

In Melbourne Schock reads in the newspaper (!), that he remains in London during the 1949/50 season.

He will have to sing the roles of the previous season with the Spanish soprano Victoria de los Angeles as Mimi. In addition, his repertoire is expanded to include 'Madame Butterfly' by Puccini (again with Schwarzkopf as a partner).

He also had to take over the role of the young poet Hector de Florac in a new opera by ARTHUR BLISS: 'THE OLYMPIANS' as soon as possible (from October 1, 1949). The transit to New Zealand is canceled.
